Healthcare Furniture

Healthcare furniture that survives the cleaning regime.

Ward, consultation, reception and waiting furniture for hospitals and clinics across the United Arab Emirates — specified against how the room is cleaned and how hard it is used, not against a catalogue photograph.

Hospital reception and waiting area furniture, Abu Dhabi

A hospital is the hardest room furniture has to live in

Office furniture is used for eight hours a day by people who mostly sit still. Hospital furniture is used continuously, by people who are unwell, and is then cleaned with agents chosen to kill organisms rather than to protect finishes. A chair specified on appearance lasts about a year of that.

The requirements are not preferences. Surfaces have to take repeated wipe-down without clouding or crazing. Seams and joints have to be closable, because an open seam is somewhere a cleaning cloth cannot reach. Upholstery has to be a material the infection-control team will accept, not the one that matched the mood board. Edges take trolley impact whether or not anyone planned for it.

We specify against those constraints first and against the scheme second, which is the order that produces a room still fit for use in year five.

Wards and bedside

Bedside furniture, overbed tables, patient and visitor seating for rooms that are cleaned between every occupant.

Consultation and treatment

Consultation desking, clinician and patient seating, and the storage a treatment room needs within arm's reach.

Reception and waiting

Reception counters and waiting seating — the busiest furniture in the building and the first thing a patient forms an opinion of.

Staff and back-of-house

Nurse stations, staff rooms, offices and changing areas, which carry the same cleaning regime and are usually specified last.

Dining and café

Restaurant and café furniture for staff and visitor areas, where the wear is closer to hospitality than to clinical.

Storage

Fitted and loose storage planned into the layout, so the corridor does not become the store room.

Sourced where a product exists, made where it does not

Much of a hospital's furniture is a product somebody already makes properly, and for those items sourcing from a vetted manufacturer is faster and better value than manufacturing. Patient seating and overbed tables are not things to reinvent.

The fitted work is different. Reception counters, nurse stations and consultation casework have to fit a room that exists, align with services that are already installed, and match finishes chosen for the rest of the interior. Those we manufacture at our own premises in Industrial ICAD III, Abu Dhabi, which is also why the fitted joinery and the loose furniture in the same department can be made to agree rather than merely coexist.

Delivered at Danat Al Emarat Hospital

We delivered wards, consultation and reception fit-out at Danat Al Emarat Hospital in Abu Dhabi — the furniture and the fitted joinery under the same contract as the interior around them.

That is the arrangement we would recommend for any healthcare project. A hospital procuring the fit-out and the furniture separately ends up coordinating two programmes into one occupancy date, and the coordination is done by the client, in the weeks when they can least afford it.

Procurement and compliance

Healthcare procurement in the UAE runs on documentation, and a supplier who cannot produce it is not evaluated on quality at all.

Diamond Sword is a licensed UAE contractor operating from Industrial ICAD III, holds ISO certification for quality management, and is ICV certified — In-Country Value, a scored criterion on Abu Dhabi government tenders. LEED specialists on staff mean a sustainability requirement is handled inside the delivery team rather than bought in.

Questions

What buyers ask before they enquire.

Do you supply furniture for clinical areas as well as waiting rooms?

Yes. Wards, bedside, consultation and treatment rooms as well as reception, waiting, staff areas and dining. Our delivered work at Danat Al Emarat Hospital covered wards, consultation and reception.

Can furniture be specified to a hospital's infection-control requirements?

Yes. Cleanability, seam construction and upholstery material are specified against the cleaning regime and the infection-control team's requirements before the scheme is considered, because those constraints decide what is usable at all.

Do you manufacture healthcare furniture or source it?

Both, decided per item. Loose items that already exist to specification are sourced from vetted manufacturers. Reception counters, nurse stations and fitted casework are manufactured at our own premises in Industrial ICAD III, Abu Dhabi.

Have you delivered a hospital project in the UAE?

Yes. Danat Al Emarat Hospital in Abu Dhabi, where we delivered the wards, consultation and reception fit-out with the furniture under the same contract as the interior.

Do you install and hand over, or supply only?

We install. Delivery, installation, snagging and handover are carried out by our own directly employed team rather than subcontracted, so one company is answerable for every item on the snag list.
